Fears rain could hamper family search as LandSAR search suspended

A search and rescue leader is worried heavy rain over parts of Marlborough on Wednesday could wash away clues, such as footprints, as the family of missing Renwick woman Jessica Boyce continue to look for her.
The 27-year-old was last seen on Tuesday last week, and was reported missing to police on Friday.
Land Search and Rescue crews from Marlborough, Nelson and KaikÅura searched a forest park in west Marlborough over the weekend, after Boyce's red Holden ute was found near Lake Chalice in the Richmond Ranges.

But Marlborough LandSAR chairman Peter Hamill said on Tuesday search teams had been suspended until police had more information.

"We're waiting for other sightings of her, or other information that might help us in our search," Hamill said.
Boyce's family were conducting a private search in other areas, although Hamill did not know where these areas were, he said. The family was approached for comment on Tuesday.
Up to 30 millimetres of rain was forecast in Lake Chalice on Wednesday. Rain was expected to clear out on Wednesday night.
Conditions were expected to dry up on Thursday and Friday with a mix of sun and clouds. There was a chance of showers in the area on Saturday.

But Hamill said the rain had the potential to wash away clues which showed movements, such as footprints.
"Definitely the weather plays a big part in it. Any rainfall and weather can hide those [clues] or wash them away."
It also could impact the ability to safely conduct the search, Hamill said.
Blenheim was expected to receive 10 to 25mm of rain on Wednesday, with lingering showers on Thursday morning.
When asked if anything had been found that linked to Boyce, Hamill said there was "nothing to report ... otherwise we would be pursuing that at full tilt".

Marlborough Senior Constable Al Hendrickson said on Tuesday police were appealing for information regarding Boyce's whereabouts.
"We are seeking information on Jess's movements in the weeks leading up to her disappearance, particularly Jess's actions and activities throughout the Blenheim and Renwick areas," he said.
"Her vehicle was located at Lake Chalice and we wish to speak to anyone who has been up the Lake Chalice Road since it recently re-opened."

Hamill said a team of volunteers had assisted police in the search for Boyce on Monday.
It followed a full search and rescue operation over the weekend, which saw three teams of two on Saturday and six teams of two on Sunday scour the Lake Chalice area near where Boyce's car was found.
"[It's] ruling out areas by going down roads and tracks to track footprints," he said.
Boyce's light frame and a spell of dry weather meant it was difficult to track her footprints, as she had not left deep indents, he said.
While good weather had helped teams during their search on the ground, the land around Lake Chalice was steep with a lot of vegetation, Hamill said.
"It's slow going, and it's hard to get around. We're doing the best we can given the terrain and vegetation."

Police also organised two separate helicopter searches over the weekend.
"The helicopter does further afield, around Lake Chalice and up at the [Department of Conservation] huts," Hamill said.
"The team took a photograph of the hut books to see who'd been there and, from that, who might be best to contact about her whereabouts."
A Facebook post by a family member said Boyce liked to be in open spaces such as camping areas and by forest, rivers and the sea.
