ANZAC - 2019 Dawn Service
“..........My Gran’s Anzac Biscuits..........
My gran made those biscuits,
Every single day,
She said “They reminded her of my granddad”,
Who had long since passed away.
They tasted really yummy,
And my friends thought that they were just great,
They each would take a handful,
To finish off the plate.
I never truly understood,
What the fuss was all about,
Weren’t they just biscuits,
For our friends that we just put out.
It wasn’t until my 20’s,
That I truly understood,
When my mother sat me down,
And told me that I should.
She spoke of my Grandad,
Who had gone off to war,
To fight in Gallipoli,
A land that I had never saw.
She said that it was bloody,
And filled with dreadful sights,
Yet even at those odds,
They still put up a fight.
The men were cut to ribbons,
Lying on that beach,
But there were tales of bravery,
And individual feats.
And as she told the story,
Her tears began to well,
And so I got out my hanky,
Coz I needed it as well.
I wish that I had known,
And not grown up so naïve,
I sorely miss my Grandmother,
And the Anzac biscuits that she made.
“In memory of my grandmother”
....................April 2010....................”
